A resume cover sheet is not such a difficult thing after all. It is not something new. Also known as a resume cover letter, it has been in existence for many years. However in the past few years, the complexity of the job market has been such that it has become an essential part of any serious job application process. Still, there are a number of people who do feel that sending a cover letter together with the resume is an absolute waste of resources. Such people are wrong. So what makes some cover letters good and others bad? What can you do to make sure that yours stands out?

Don’t get carried away with creativity. It ironic that I am putting it as the first point when some would argue that creativity is necessary in making your resume stand out. Well, we want the resume to stand out , but for the good reason. For the sole purpose of making sure that that their resume cover sheets are read, not necessarily land them an interview, some people have gone to what can be described as outrages extents. They have chosen to go with extremely large fonts, writing in caps and all the tricky things to get noticed. Well, though they may like your jokes, they may not like the joker.

Ensure that your resume cover page has all the spellings correct and with no grammatical errors. Pleas this is just unforgivable. There is no way that you will ever apologize because you won’t even be there. This shows that you are careless and many organizations have enough of them; they do not need any more.

Another thing is countercheck your facts. This is not about the spelling or grammatical error, but just make sure that everything is the way you want them to be before you send out your letter. State what you want to do for the organization. It is obvious to you that you want to get that job so as to fulfill your own ambitions. Probably to live a good life, take your kiss to the best schools and spend the rest of your life eating and making merry. However, this is not what should come out when one reads your resume cover page. What should come out is your desire (if you don’t have, get it) to make the life of your boss easier by being someone who can achieve a lot, someone who can work under minimum supervision.
