Physical Therapy Continuing Education

Physical therapy continuing education is considered to be one of the most popular and broad spectrum of post secondary activities and programs. The recognized forms offered by this type of continuing education include degree credit courses for non-traditional students, non-degree physical therapy career training, formal personal physical therapy enrichment courses, self directed learning, and physical therapy experimental learning as applied to problem solving. This type of continuing education is very much alike with adult education, first of all because it is addressed to adult students, especially to those who are not representing the traditional undergraduate or university age. Continuing education, however, does not include basic instruction courses as it is assumed that the student already has a certain education and he or she is simply trying to continue it through the physical therapy continuing education courses.

Most of the times, when someone decides they want to attend to physical therapy continuing education courses, they are required to enroll in college/university credit-granting courses that usually work as an extension of a certain university or college and that require only a part-time participation of the students. However, there are situations in which the students are required to enroll non-credit-granting courses, in such cases when the courses are taken for personal, non-vocational enrichment. It is important to note that there are a lot of non-credit physical therapy continuing education courses that have vocational functions. Most of these non-credit courses are generally offered by community colleges.

Continuing education is not only for those who want to become professional physical therapist. Professional development is also offered by this type of education. People can apply for specific physical therapy education and for attendance to these specific learning activities they will be issued certificates or Continuing Education Units (CEU’s). Physical therapy is a field that imposes continuing education requirements on those who have practicing licenses within this profession. These requirements are meant to encourage these professionals to enlarge their knowledge and being continuously up to date with any new developments that may have occurred. However, these requirements are very vast and depending on the level of your career and exact profession in the physical therapy field you may have to apply to college or university courses, extension courses or just seminar attendance.

Physical therapy continuing edcuation has various methods of delivery which may include traditional courses, such as lectures and laboratories, but we must note that the vast method of delivery of the continuing education today is very much based on distance learning. This involves a lot of independent studying and a lot of flexibility as far as your job and family is concerned. At the same time, you benefit of a lot of learning material like videotaped/CD-ROM material, broadcast programing, online delivery. Also, the use of conference group study (online) and diferent types of seminars are meant to enhance the learning process in addition to the independent study. Most continuing education programms use a combination of at least two of the three elements mentioned before, traditional, distance and conference-based learning.
