Pediatrician Salary - No Child's Play

In the salary comparison for various types of doctor’s, the pediatrician salary would be considered a trifle low. But then all parents love these people. You would too if you were ever stuck with a small infant or child or even an adolescent who needs urgent care but is incapable of communicating his/her problem to you. The one person in this world who comes to mind instantly in these times is the pediatrician who somehow soothes, eases his way into their world and quickly calms them down. That’s what they do. A pediatrician treat babies, infants and adolescents with medical problems. They also advise on the growth of a child and whether it is normal which makes pediatricians pretty indispensable until the children are old enough to take care of themselves.

The pediatrician salary ranges from USD 40000 per annum (just out of residency) to USD 150000 (pediatric surgeon) according to one report. As per the American Medical Association report however, the average income of pediatricians is USD 135000 per annum (ranging from USD 60000 to a staggering USD 400000 per annum). But money apart most pediatricians are in the profession for the love of it. Being with babies and children and watching them grow is something they enjoy.

Naturally, pediatricians are best at their profession if they like and understand babies, are observant and sensitive, are equipped to tackle stressed out parents and are pretty patient with their patients. If you have any or all these qualities go right ahead and be a pediatrician. You can have your fill of bonny babies with their innocent eyes and naïve gullible ways that make you wonder at this creation.

To be a pediatrician one needs 4 years of undergraduate school followed by four more years of medical school, followed by 1-3 years of internship and residency. Then one must takethe qualifying board exams and go on to specialise with further training in pediatrics. With all these years of study and work experience pediatricians would expect to make a decent income of course. Hours vary for these baby specialists but most do put in about 50 hours a week during which they may treat about 127 patients on an average. No child’s play you would agree.
