Regional Job Sites
There are several reasons that you should look at your local job sites during
your job search. First, many local job websites are run by local newspaper
companies (for examples, Boston Globe
Works and New York Times Job
Mart), they are the online version of the newspaper advertising. By visiting
these websites, you can find many more job opportunities (You know, before
online recruiting was born, employers used to use newspaper as the only
media to advertise their job openings. And some small companies still do it this
way). Just keep in mind that CareerBuild is now owned by three giant newspaper
companies: Gannett Inc, Knight Ridder and Tribute Company, so some local
newspaper job ads may automatically show in CareerBuilder. But it never hurts to
take a look. Second, as a local job seeker, you
have more connections here. Your high school buddies or your college
professors may be able to refer you to the hiring manager of some position you
are interested. Third, employers are more likely to interview local candidates
since there's no transportation fee when they interview them and no relocation
fee when they hire them.
So take some time to investigate the job opportunities in your local job
boards, it may well worth it. And after you identify some positions that you're
interested, send your
resume to the hiring manager with a tailored
cover letter.
Do mention that you're a LOCAL candidate in the cover letter (sorry, I
didn't mean to scream, but it's really an advantage for you).
